I grew up mostly in Berkeley, California, and Evanston, Illinois, and went to college at the University of Colorado, in Boulder.
I graduated from Northwestern University's masters program in journalism in 1985. I have spent my entire professional life as a reporter, at trade and consumer magazines, as a freelancer, and at newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times.
I now work for the New York Times as a science reporter and live in suburban New York.
